How to Help Nepal

Whether you have trekked and climbed among Nepal’s majestic peaks or plan to someday, many of our hearts have been touched by the country’s people, culture, landscapes. That’s especially so in light of the earthquake and resulting avalanche that ripped through Everest Base Camp. The most recent aftershock, which triggered devastating destruction and landslides at the base of the Himalaya, may not be the last.

And while Kathmandu and the Everest region will get the most media attention, the countryside villages were hit hard and are the hardest to reach. “If you want to help, make a donation. It’s time to seize the moment and be compassionate,” says Jim Nowak, a climber and founder of the dZi Foundation. The foundation builds long-term development programs to empower Nepal’s most remote and impoverished communities to identify their own problems and implement solutions. “This is not a short-term problem, it’s going to take years to rebuild.”

Here is a list of some of the ways you can help.

Mountain Community Organizations

Alex Lowe Charitable Trust
Founded by Jenni Lowe Anker and alpinist Conrad Anker in memory of Alex Lowe, the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation is accepting relief donations that will be disbursed to the indigenous climbing communities of the Khumbu to help mitigate loss of life, livelihood, or homes.

American Himalayan Foundation
American Himalayan Foundation set up a special earthquake fund where 100 percent of the donations go directly to helping rebuild and recover in the wake of this disaster.

dZi Foundation
Serving more than 29,000 people, the dZi Foundation is collecting funds to help Nepal’s most remote communities recover from the devastating earthquake. Their partner communities have been hit hard and will need help to rebuild schools, homes, and local infrastructure.

The Himalayan Trust
The Himalayan Trust, a New Zealand organization founded by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1960, works with villages and schools in the Everest region.

The Juniper Fund
Founded by Everest climbing guides Melissa Arnot and David Morton, the Juniper Fund provides assistance to individuals, families, and communities in underserved countries adversely impacted by their work for the mountain-based adventure industry.
