Skip the Sleeping Bag for a Versatile Comforter/Blanket

Is this a new era in sleeping comfort? Big-wall climber Andy Kirkpatrick has been using a synthetically insulated blanket, not a sleeping bag, for some of his biggest assaults, including a seven-day winter climb of the Eiger. And now comes a new brand, Rumpl, that makes just that — synthetic blankets.

Rumpls are, in a word, fun. The swooping stitching brings a loopy aesthetic to a traditionally boring product, the comforter, while filling it with insulation that will stand up to a wet morning in the meadow or weeklong river trip through the Frank Church. Or, yep, just throw it over your bed.

Given the affordability of synthetics, 200 bucks for a queen size blanket seems a bit on the steep side, but Rumpl is indeed a startup, getting its funding via Kickstarter. Maybe the price will come down. Cough.
