iPhone App Gives You Full Camera Control

The iPhone camera gets better with each new version of Apple’s iOS operating system, as well as its phones, of course, but it’s still a far cry from offering the creativity and control of a real camera. That leaves the door open for apps like Manual, which lets you have greater input on ISO, shutter speed, focus, and white balance.

The question is whether you want that level of control. The beauty of a smartphone camera is running and gunning. But as these everyday shooters supplant bulkier devices — “the best camera is the one you have” — we can’t help but bring some level of influence to the party. In the case of Manual, I found two of the settings make a big difference. White balance lets you quickly avoid the strange color cast you get shooting indoors or under the glow of fluorescent lights, and setting the shutter speed allows to prevent blurs from fast-moving subjects (or create them, if that’s your preference). These functions alone make Manual worth the two bucks.
