SMASH FEST 1 is a monthlong series of film, art, and community events that will span the New York area, from Brooklyn to Long Beach, Montauk, and Rockaway Beach. It will bring to life all of what SMASH stands for—surf, movies, art, shaping, history. The film festival will also be the first profit-sharing surf film festival in the world.

The 2013 SMASH FEST 1 features program reflects on the diversity of surf culture. Selections range from a story of a once great surfer and his drug-related demise and a film about a surfer on the ascent with his futuristic power surfing to the abstract and artistic.

By Josh Pomer

Screening Time: Saturday, July 27, 7:00 p.m.

Location: The Rockaway Beach Surf Club: 3-02 Beach 87th St, Queens, NY

For generations, California has long been a surfer mecca, but never seriously considered for its big waves. However in 1975, a Half Bay high school kid named Jeff Clark surfed a 20+ foot wave outside of Pillar Point Harbor, just south of San Francisco. His pioneering achievement single-handedly gave birth to the legend of Mavericks. Discovering Mavericks captures the passion and dedication of surfers like Jeff Clark, Peter Mel, Flea, Shane Dorian, Nick Lamb, Zack Wormhout, Brock Little, and Mike Parsons. This film also honors the sacrifice of men like Mark Foo, Jay Moriarty, and others who dared to take on the unforgiving waves at Mavericks. This is their true story.
