Trekking Lobuche East, Nepal
We climbed Lobuche East as part of a multi-summit expedition in fall 2008. Our main objective was to attempt to summit Ama Dablam. We chose Lobuche East because it offered a nice mixed route. We were the first party of the season to attempt the summit.
Unfortunately, due to very snowfall and high avalanche risk, we had to turn back approximately 1,500 feet below the summit. An analysis of the snow pack revealed a very unstable layer 15 inches below the surface. While we did not reach the summit, this climb offered tremendous views, including a sunrise on Lhotse and Everest.
We traveled with Rainier Mountaineering Inc., a professional guiding service based in Ashford, Washington. I have been on numerous climbs and one expedition to Denali with RMI. The person on the picture is RMI guide Casey Grom, breaking trail on the southeast ridge.—Philippe Herschke
