Photo in the News: Award-Winning Look at Remote Russia

2 min readADVENTURE Contributing Photographer Aaron Huey took Third Place in the Picture of the Year International's "Feature Single" category for an amazing image taken while on assignment with writer McKenzie Funk to hitchhike clear across Russia. Their gutsy plan turned out to be one of last year's most ambitious adventures—traveling from Vladivostok, a Russian port on the Sea of Japan, to Moscow, seven time zones to the west. The resulting article, "6,000 Miles to Moscow," reveals what it's like to be a traveler amid the topsy-turvy globalization of the 21st century. Though the five-week Trans-Siberian highway trip generated hundreds of wonderful, diverse images, we love that POY selected this photo. "Aaron captured the perfect moment—the choreography of all the different elements in the frame is effortless," noted ADVENTURE photo editor Sabine Meyer. "The horse looks like a statue, and yet it is 'moving' cattle! We could very well be in the great American West instead of Siberia."
Picture of the Year International, run by the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, is one of the oldest and most revered photo contests.
